Sun 11 September 2022:

According to Sydney-based 7 News, a secret handwritten letter from Queen Elizabeth II to Australia has been kept in a vault, where she had directed it to be opened in 63 years.

The letter was written in November 1986, following the restoration of Sydney’s Queen Victoria Building, and it has been housed in a glass case in a secured compartment in the palace’s dome ever since.

Nobody, not even the Queen’s private staff, is aware of what the letter actually says. One must therefore wait until 2085 to learn what the letter’s contents are.

“On a suitable day to be selected by you in the year 2085 A.D, would you please open this envelope and convey to the citizens of Sydney my message to them,” the instruction addressed to the Lord Mayor of Sydney says.

It is simply signed, “Elizabeth R.”

The Queen Victoria Building was established in 1898 and named in honour of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, which was observed the previous year to commemorate the monarch’s accession 60 years earlier.

Queen Victoria was the great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth.

At present day, the British monarch remains Australia’s head of state, with King Charles III inheriting the role following the death of his mother.

In a 1999 referendum, Australians voted to retain the Queen – with her Majesty visiting the country 16 times during her 70 years on the throne

As a constitutional monarch, King Charles is not involved in the day-to-day government business of the Australian Government, but holds a ceremonial and symbolic role.
