EX-CHAIRMAN OF THE SHIA WAQF BOARD FILES PIL IN INDIAN SC SEEKING REMOVAL OF 26 VERSES OF QURAN

Rizvi has been in limelight for his blasphemous remarks against Islam, Quran and early Islamic leaders including the four caliphs. He has been propagating that 26 verses promote terrorism and they are not a part of the original Quranic text. He says the said verses were added by the caliphs to fulfill their own interests.

He had approached the Supreme Court seeking deletion of the 26 verses from Quran. The court, however, dismissed his plea and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him.

Who is Waseem Rizvi?

Waseem Rizvi, a Lucknow-based, Ex-chairman of the Shia Waqf Board considered close to the Hindu right-wing,

He filed a public interest litigation (PIL) before the Indian Supreme Court earlier this year, requesting the removal of 26 verses from the holy Quran.

This is perhaps the most provocative move which even the fanatics of Hindutva brigades have not made in the recent past. Rizvi claims that these verses “promote terrorism, violence and jihad”.

They were “inserted” in the holy book by the first three caliphs of Islam, namely Abu Bakr, Umar and Usman “to widen the influence of Islam by force”. Rizvi has also claimed that these verses are being used by terrorists to justify their acts.
