Volcanic ash disrupts around 2,300 flights and affects approximately 270,000 passengers

Thousands of passengers remained stranded Monday after Indonesian authorities extended the closure of seven airports, including Jakarta’s main international airport, until 6 pm local time (1100GMT).

The temporary shutdown followed the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, which sent volcanic ash into the atmosphere and forced officials to suspend hundreds of flights over aviation safety concerns.

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport was crowded Monday morning, with passengers lining up for refunds or to reschedule their journeys, the Jakarta Globe reported. Many flights were postponed until Tuesday.

Mount Anak Krakatau, located about 150 kilometers (90 miles) from Jakarta, erupted on Saturday, releasing a plume of ash into the sky.

“At this point, around 2,300 flights have been affected and approximately 270,000 passengers have been impacted by the volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau,” Berton Panjaitan, a spokesperson for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, told Anadolu in a statement on Monday.

Seven Airports Remain Closed

Eight airports initially suspended operations Sunday after volcanic ash was detected in their airspace.

Berton said that, as of 9 am (0200GMT) Monday, seven airports remained temporarily closed, while Atung Bungsu Airport in Pagar Alam had resumed normal operations.

He described the closures as a precautionary measure based on aviation safety considerations.

“The status of these airports is continuously reviewed based on volcanic ash dispersion and aviation safety,” he added.

“Our priority is safety, and we will resume normal operations as soon as conditions are safe.”
