Tue 06 September 2022:

Instagram was penalized €405 million by Irish authorities for violating children’s privacy.

The ongoing issue centered on children’s data, notably their email and phone numbers.

Some reportedly upgraded to business accounts to access analytics tools such as profile visits, without realising this made more of their data public.

The company that owns Instagram, Meta, announced that it will challenge the ruling. The regulator has penalized the corporation three times.

Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) stated, “We adopted our final decision last Friday and it does contain a fine of €405m [£349m].”

Instagram updated its settings over a year ago and has since released new features to keep teens safe and their information private, the Meta spokesperson said.

Because Facebook, Apple, Google, and other tech companies have their EU headquarters in Ireland, the DPC is responsible for regulating them. More than a dozen inquiries have been made into Meta firms, including as Facebook and WhatsApp.

WhatsApp received a record-breaking €225 million penalties in 2021 for breaking EU data protection laws in 2018.

Under the EU’s “one stop shop” method for regulating large multinational corporations, the Irish regulator completed a draft judgement in the Instagram probe in December and shared it with other EU regulators.
