Mon 04 October 2021:

For the first time in two years, Iranian women will be allowed to enter a stadium in Tehran to support the national team in a World Cup 2022 qualifier against South Korea.

“The presence of women has been authorised for the match between the national football teams of Iran and South Korea” at the capital’s Azadi stadium on October 12, the state television-linked Young Journalists Club said.

Because of the coronavirus outbreak, all fans entering stadiums in Iran have been banned for a year.

Women were last allowed to attend a game at the 80,000-seat Azadi stadium in October 2019, when Iran defeated Cambodia 14-0.

Following Iran’s Islamic revolution in 1979, women were denied entry to stadiums, order to protect them from inappropriate male behavior.

FIFA, the governing body of football, has put pressure on Iran to allow women into international matches.

However, Iran has only ever allowed a limited amount of women supporters, limiting them to 1,000 in 2018, despite the fact that 3,500 women were able to watch the Cambodia game.
