Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed the age-old friendship with India, calling for the expansion of economic and scientific relations between the two nations.
The Iranian president held a meeting with Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on last week Thursday (26 September).
“As a very important Asian country, India has had long-standing relations with Iran,” President Rouhani noted, adding, “In this regard, we can develop our relations in scientific, research and economic fields between the two countries.”
On the mutual efforts to overcome the recent obstacles to banking and energy relations between Tehran and New Delhi, Rouhani appreciated India’s investment in the first phase of Chabahar Port, saying, “Today, Iran, India and Afghanistan are enjoying the advantages of this important project, and the region’s current and future generations will benefit from it.”
For his part, Modi pointed to his recent visit to Iran, noting, “My meeting with the Supreme Leader was very good and constructive, and he treated me so friendly that I felt at home,” according to the Iranian president’s official website.
The Indian prime minister also stressed that his country has always supported Iran’s right to use peaceful nuclear energy, emphasizing that India would only recognize the UN sanctions.
At the end of the meeting, President Rouhani invited the Indian leader to visit Iran again.
