Thu 03 August 2023:

The ISIL (ISIS) group has confirmed the death of its leader, Abu Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurashi, and named Abu Hafs al-Hashimi al-Qurashi as his replacement.

The group said on Thursday that its leader had been killed in “direct clashes” in rebel-held northwestern Syria with the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group.

The announcement was made by an ISIL spokesman in a recorded message on its channels on the Telegram messaging app, without specifying when he was killed.

In April, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the leader of ISIS had been killed in Syria in an operation carried out by Turkey’s MIT intelligence agency.

“The suspected leader of Daesh [ISIS], codename Abu Hussein Al Qurashi, has been neutralised in an operation carried out yesterday by the MIT in Syria,” Mr Erdogan told the TRT Turk broadcaster at the time.

He said the MIT had been following Al Qurashi for a long time.

ISIS announced the death of its previous leader, Abu Hasan Al Hashimi Al Qurashi, on November 30, replacing him with Abu Hussein Al Qurashi.

In October 2019, Washington announced it had killed ISIS leader at the time Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi in north-western Syria.

Despite having been driven out of much of the territory in Iraq and Syria that it once controlled, ISIS continues to launch attacks.
