After reiterating the US’s support of Israel, the president said the country has a “right” to retaliate to the “vicious attacks” conducted by the militant group.
He spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this evening, and says he told him the US response will be “decisive, swift and overwhelming”.
“We uphold the laws of war, it matters, there is a difference,” he adds, saying Americans are praying for the families affected by the atrocities.
“This is what they mean by human tragedy,” he says, adding the US will continue to “stand united” with Israel.
‘Holocaust survivors among hostages’, says Biden
Holocaust survivors are among those held hostage by Hamas, Joe Biden says.
At least 14 American citizens have been killed, he says.
Hamas has raped, assaulted and paraded women as trophies, says the president.
Parents have been “butchered using their bodies trying to protect their children”.
He described the desperation of families waiting to hear the fate of their relatives held captive.
“We must be crystal clear: We stand with Israel,” says Mr Biden.
Hamas’ stated purpose is to kill Jews and their attacks were an “act of sheer evil”, he says.
“Hamas offers nothing but terror and bloodshed.”
