ISRAEL’S FUTURE ‘IN DANGER’ AS GOVERNMENT ON BRINK OF COLLAPSE: PM BENNETT

Israel’s future is in danger, according to Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, whose ruling coalition is now a minority in Israel’s parliament.

“Being responsible for forming a rescue government was a difficult choice, but the country’s future is in danger and we must fight to preserve the unity of our people, because we have no other country,” Bennett said in a statement.

Bennett’s warning came after an Arab legislator from the leftist Meretz Party, Ghaida Rinawie Zoabi, resigned from the ruling coalition, reducing it to a minority in the Knesset.

Zoabi cited the government’s tough stance on Arab issues as grounds for her departure, including the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in occupied East Jerusalem, the demolition of Arab homes, land seizures, and the controversial citizenship law.

Bennett’s government is currently on the verge of collapse, with only 59 members in the 120-seat Knesset.

In June 2021, 61 Knesset members representing eight Israeli parties established the ruling coalition.

Bennett asserted that the present administration had accomplished several goals, including combating the coronavirus, unemployment, and violence. He also attributed his leadership with a 30 percent reduction in the number of murder cases in the Arab population.

Zoabi’s exit was the second since right-wing Yamina Party MP Idit Silman left the coalition in April.
