Wed 14 June 2023:

The European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol) reported on Monday that Istanbul Airport hosted 1,684 planes on Sunday, breaking Frankfurt Airport’s previous high of 1,624 established on September 11, 2019, RT reported

The hub, which is already the biggest in Europe, experienced a 12% increase in daily traffic when football fans were leaving their homes after watching the 2023 Champions League Final in Istanbul, said the watchdog.

The previous three daily arrival-departure records at a European airport were all set in quick succession in 2019 before the pandemic, according to Eurocontrol.

“The former record was held by Frankfurt, overtaking, in less than a month, Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport (1,612 daily flights on 26 August 2019), which in turn replaced Madrid Barajas (1,600 daily flights on 2 June 2019),” it added.

Istanbul Airport set a new record for the volume of daily flights and passengers last month, according to the Turkish minister of infrastructure and transportation Adil Karaismailoglu. It carried 195,640 people on 1,301 flights on April 30.

Istanbul’s new airport, one of two international hubs serving the city, was opened four and a half years ago and is bigger. It replaced the place of the earlier Ataturk Airport and has since grown into a full of activity, modern air hub linking Europe and Asia. The hub serves as the base of operations for Star Alliance carrier Turkish Airlines. The airport reported serving more than 200 million passengers on May 6.

The current political turmoil has made it possible for Istanbul’s new airport to take advantage of the increased demand. Among the most popular international routes for the city are flights to Moscow, London, Dubai, and Tel Aviv. Tehran flights, the most popular route, have been traveled by some six million passengers since the airport opened in 2018.
