Fri 17 September 2021:

COVID-19 health cards are now required for all workers in Italy, making it the first European country to do so.

On Thursday, the Italian government approved a new law that makes digital vaccine certificates mandatory in both the public and private sectors.

The duty will take effect on October 15 and will last until the end of the year.

“We are extending the obligation of the green pass to the entire world of work, public and private, and we are doing so for two essential reasons: to make these places safer and to make our vaccination campaign even stronger,” health minister Roberto Speranza told the press.

The effort aims to boost vaccine uptake and lower infection rates in the face of a possible COVID-19 outbreak this winter.

All personnel will be asked to show proof of having been vaccinated against COVID-19, that they are recovering from the infection, or that they have recently tested negative for the virus.

According to reports, only pensioners and unemployed persons will be excused from carrying a “green permit.”

Any employee who fails to show a valid COVID-19 health certificate will be suspended for five days without pay, but will not be fired. Non-vaccinated people could face fines of up to €1,500.

The measure was overwhelmingly approved by the Italian Senate, with 189 votes in favor, 32 votes against, and only two abstentions.
