JOHNSON PULLS OUT OF CONSERVATIVE LEADERSHIP RACE

News Desk World

Sun 23 October 2022:

Boris Johnson left the Conservative Party’s leadership contest. Rishi Sunak now has access to No. 10 due to his withdrawal.

59 Tory MPs publicly supported the former prime minister, but he still needed 100 votes to win.

With more than 140 supporters, the former chancellor Sunak has a sizable lead over Penny Mordaunt, the only other contender.

In a statement, Johnson said he had “cleared the very high hurdle of 102 nominations”, but came to the conclusion that “this is simply not the right time”.

He said he had “reached out” to leadership rivals Sunak and Mordaunt to see if they could work together in the national interest, but it had not proved possible.
