Thu 09 June 2022:

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of Kenya revealed on Wednesday that it has discovered 246,465 dead people on its voter list for the August 9 parliamentary elections.

The Commission discovered multiple irregularities, requiring it to postpone the publication of the voter’s register until Wednesday.

The electoral body also discovered that 226,143 voters were registered with National Identity cards that did not belong to them, and that 481,711 people’s information were duplicated.

In addition, 164,269 people were found to have registered with invalid identifying documents (IDs and passports), which the Commission stated must be resolved before the register can be certified and published.

“The Commission has decided to address the findings prior to certifying the register for publication on or before June 20,” said Commission chair Wafula Chebukati, citing the implementation of the preliminary audit results.

Chebukati pointed out that the Commission had previously stated that the voter registration would be certified and published on or before June 9.

Raila Odinga of the Azimio Coalition Political Party, William Ruto of the United Democratic Alliance-UDA, George Wajackoyah of the Roots Party, and David Mwaure Waihiga of the Agano Party have all been cleared by the IEBC to compete for president.

Electoral irregularities have tainted previous elections, resulting in rioting and deaths.
