LABOUR EXTEND POLL LEAD AS CONSERVATIVES LOSE UK PUBLIC TRUST ON ‘BIG DECISIONS’

Mon 01  May 2023:

Labour have increased their lead over the Tories to an 18 point margin, according to a new poll.

The poll by Opinium put Labour on 44 percent, an increase of two points compared to a fortnight ago. The Conservative Party dropped two points to 26 percent, The Telegraph reported.

According to the poll, 20 percent of those who voted Conservative in 2019 are currently planning to switch their vote directly to Labour.

It bucks a trend of recent polls that have suggested Rishi Sunak’s Tories are closing the gap on Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour Party.

It will make dispiriting reading for Sunak, who is just days away from his first national election since becoming Prime Minister, with voters across large parts of England going to the polls for local elections on Thursday.

James Crouch, the head of policy and public affairs at Opinium, said, “With just one week to go until the local elections, the Conservative Party is yet to make a significant dent in Labour’s lead according to our latest poll.”

According to the survey results, only a quarter (26 percent) of the public approve of Sunak’s performance as Prime Minister, with 44 percent disapproving (-18 net approval rating). This continues a decline from a -6 net approval rating at the start of the month.

Keir is on a rounded net approval rating of -3 percent, with 31 percent approving and 33 percent disapproving.

However, the two leaders remain far closer on who would be the “best prime minister”, with Keir on 28 percent and Sunak on 26 percent.

Only 23 percent think the Conservatives can be trusted to take big decisions, while 53 percent think they cannot be trusted.

Crouch added, “Although Rishi Sunak has attempted to restore a basic sense of what his party stands for, the latest results show that still less than a quarter of the country trusts the governing party to make big decisions.”

“Until the public feels it can trust the Government again, it is no wonder that the Conservatives are struggling to turnaround their position in the polls,” Crouch  added.

Opinium carried out an online survey of 2,076 UK adults from April 26 to 28.
