LABOUR KEEPS A BIG LEAD OVER TRUSS’S CONSERVATIVES, POLL SHOWS

Sat 08 October 2022:

A poll released on Saturday revealed that the opposition Labour Party in Britain continues to enjoy a significant lead over the Conservative Party of Prime Minister Liz Truss, which has struggled to recover since its annual conference this week, Reuters reported.

The YouGov poll, conducted on Thursday and Friday for The Times newspaper and based on a survey of 1,737 British adults, found that support for Labour was at 52%, down two points from a survey conducted by the same organization in late September, while the Conservatives saw a mere one-point increase to 22%.

The poll was conducted after Truss, speaking at her first party conference since becoming Conservative leader in early September, defended her decision to cut taxes which sharply pushed up the cost of borrowing and split her own party.

Following backlash, Truss and her finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng abandoned one of the more controversial proposals: eliminating the top rate of income tax.

The following British election is anticipated to occur in 2024.

According to YouGov, when asked which party leader would make the best prime minister, voters gave Labour leader Keir Starmer a commanding lead over Truss, 43% to 13%.
