Landslides are a significant and recurring hazard in Indonesia due to the country’s geography and climate. Indonesia’s archipelago lies along the Ring of Fire, characterized by active tectonics, volcanic activity, and steep mountainous terrain, making the soil prone to instability. Heavy rainfall, common during the monsoon season, further exacerbates the risk by saturating the soil and triggering slides.
Deforestation and land-use changes, such as agriculture and urban development on steep slopes, contribute to landslide vulnerability by destabilizing the soil. Poor infrastructure in rural areas can worsen the impact, leading to fatalities, displacement, and damage to property.
Efforts to mitigate landslides include reforestation, sustainable land management, and early warning systems. Community education and disaster preparedness programs also aim to reduce casualties and improve response times. However, the challenges remain significant, requiring continuous investment in sustainable development and disaster risk reduction.
