Fri 23 August 2024:

Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton is actively working to bring the Formula One Race to Africa, engaging with Rwanda and South Africa to make it happen. Speaking at the Dutch Grand Prix, Hamilton emphasized that the timing is perfect for Africa to host a race again, marking the first since South Africa’s Kyalami circuit last held one in 1993.

“The time’s 100% right,” Hamilton stated, critiquing the global tendency to overlook Africa. He expressed his belief that a Grand Prix on the continent would not only showcase Africa’s greatness but also boost tourism and other opportunities. “Why are we not on that continent?” the Mercedes driver questioned, highlighting that at least one track is race-ready.

Rwanda in the Spotlight: A Long-Term Vision

Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali recently mentioned Rwanda’s interest in hosting a race, although the required permanent circuit is yet to be built. Hamilton, who has a deep connection to Rwanda, revealed he’s been working quietly behind the scenes and plans to speak with Domenicali. He acknowledged Rwanda as a long-term project but praised the country’s enthusiasm for joining the F1 calendar.

A Personal Mission: Africa’s Impact on Hamilton

Hamilton, the first and only Black driver in Formula One, has frequently visited Africa, including recent trips to Morocco, Senegal, Benin, Mozambique, and Madagascar with the UN refugee agency UNHCR. Reflecting on his experiences, Hamilton spoke of the profound impact these visits have had on him, particularly witnessing the hardships faced by displaced people and the historical legacy of places like Senegal.

“Through all those experiences, I feel it’s just adding to my compass of what I want to do moving forwards,” Hamilton shared, underscoring his commitment to making a difference both on and off the track.
