LONDON MAYOR URGES WORKERS TO USE FREE RETRAINING TO AVOID UNEMPLOYMENT

Wed 29 September 2021:

On Wednesday, London Mayor Sadiq Khan urged low-wage and unemployed citizens to take advantage of a state-funded initiative that allows them to retrain for positions where skilled workers are in short supply.

The London furlough scheme will finish on Thursday, and 297,100 Londoners, or 8% of the city’s workforce, may be laid off as a result of the pandemic-related issue.

“I’m offering Londoners the chance to retrain or upskill for free and gain qualifications in futureproof industries that are key to London’s recovery from the pandemic. This funding will help many people find their feet after what has been an extraordinarily difficult 18 months,” Khan was quoted as saying.

The program has been given 11 million pounds ($14.8 million) to equip Londoners with opportunities to gain degrees in areas like hospitality, technology, creative, green, health, and social care.

During the first coronavirus outbreak last spring, the British government implemented the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme. Workers were eligible for a grant covering 80% of their pay. The program was created to avoid mass layoffs in the case of a pandemic.
