Two luxury apartments bought for £36 million are reportedly being sold after their Iranian owner defaulted on mortgages
Two luxury penthouses in London reportedly linked to Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei have been placed on the market, with a combined purchase value of £36 million, The Sunday Times reported.
The properties are located at 3a Palace Green, an exclusive development overlooking Kensington Palace and near the official London residence of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Both apartments reportedly include staff accommodation and private roof terraces.
One of the properties is a five-bedroom duplex spanning 3,944 square feet across the sixth and seventh floors. It was purchased for £19 million in 2016 and is now being offered for just under £12 million.
Knight Frank and Sotheby’s International Realty are jointly marketing the apartment. The listing describes it as “an exceptional duplex penthouse with staff accommodation and commanding unrivalled views across Kensington Gardens from one of London’s most prestigious addresses.”
The brochure does not mention the property’s politically sensitive connections. However, it states: “Due to the property being in receivership, we do not have all of the material information for the property; therefore you should ensure you make all relevant inquiries,” the newspaper reported.

Second penthouse also placed in receivership
The second apartment occupies the seventh and eighth floors of the same building. It was purchased for £16.75 million in 2014 and has also entered receivership.
Land Registry records reportedly show that financial advisory company Teneo was appointed as receiver. The property does not appear to have been publicly listed, and its asking price remains unknown.
Several potential buyers are believed to have viewed the apartments amid strong interest, according to The Sunday Times.
Owner sanctioned by US and UK
The registered owner of both properties is Iranian banker Ali Ansari. The US Treasury sanctioned him in July, describing him as a “key financier” for Khamenei.
Washington said Ansari “oversees a sprawling global network of assets benefiting Iran’s leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, and other regime elites.”
Britain had previously sanctioned Ansari over allegations that he financed Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. His UK assets were frozen, and he was prohibited from entering the country. He is understood to deny any wrongdoing.
The British government is believed to have approved the sale after Ansari defaulted on the mortgages, The Sunday Times reported. Private lenders that financed the purchases appointed receivers to recover their funds, although the original loan amounts remain unknown.
Any money left after the lenders are repaid is expected to remain frozen while Ansari is subject to sanctions.
Khamenei’s whereabouts remain unclear
Employees at the Palace Green development reportedly have not seen either Khamenei or Ansari since the apartments were purchased.
Mojtaba Khamenei has also not been seen or heard publicly since his father was killed in US-Israeli airstrikes in February, leaving his condition and circumstances uncertain.
