LONG-RANGE MISSILE DEPLOYMENT IN GERMANY COULD LEAD TO COLD WAR-STYLE CRISIS, PUTIN WARNS

Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned the United States on Sunday that if Washington deploys long-range missiles in Germany starting in 2026, Russia will respond by stationing similar missiles within striking distance of the West.

Earlier this month, the U.S. and Germany announced the deployment of long-range fire capabilities in Germany in 2026 to reaffirm their commitment to NATO and European defense. This deployment will include SM-6, Tomahawk cruise missiles, and developmental hypersonic weapons with longer ranges than current capabilities in Europe.

Putin’s Warning to the U.S.

In a speech to sailors from Russia, China, Algeria, and India marking Russian Navy Day in St. Petersburg, Putin warned that such U.S. actions could provoke a Cold War-like missile crisis.

“The flight time to targets on our territory of such missiles, which in the future may be equipped with nuclear warheads, will be about 10 minutes,” Putin said. “We will take mirror measures to deploy, taking into account the actions of the United States, its satellites in Europe and in other regions of the world.”

Tensions and Historical Comparisons

Putin accused the U.S. of stoking tensions and transferring Typhon missile systems to Denmark and the Philippines, likening the U.S. plans to NATO’s decision to deploy Pershing II launchers in Western Europe in 1979. The Soviet leadership feared Pershing II deployments were part of a U.S. strategy to decapitate the Soviet Union.

“This situation is reminiscent of the events of the Cold War related to the deployment of American medium–range Pershing missiles in Europe,” Putin said.

Putin reiterated that Russia could resume production of intermediate and shorter-range nuclear-capable missiles and consider their deployment in response to U.S. missile deployments in Europe and Asia.
