Population still critically low after falling below 150 in 2021
Conservation efforts to restore the Malayan tiger population have yielded positive results, Malaysia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability said on Tuesday.
The Malayan tiger, a subspecies found only in Peninsular Malaysia, is listed as critically endangered. Its numbers fell from more than 3,000 in the 1950s to fewer than 150 in 2021, driven by habitat loss, declining prey and poaching.

Enforcement and habitat work credited for gains
This improvement is the result of several measures implemented by the ministry since 2021, including strengthened enforcement against wildlife smuggling and measures to monitor and recover tiger and prey populations, it said in a statement.
“There has been an increase in the Malayan Tiger population compared to the 2021 figure, which stood at fewer than 150 individuals,” it said.
The ministry did not release an updated headcount.
Focus on forests in Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu
Special attention has also been given to the preservation of the tiger habitats in Peninsular Malaysia to strengthen their management and protection, particularly in the states of Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu, it said.
The Malayan tiger, a subspecies native to the region, remains threatened by deforestation and the illegal wildlife trade, including poaching.
