Sun 20 September 2026:

At least two people died and a key oil refinery suffered damage after hundreds of drones struck Moscow and the surrounding region on Sunday, the last day of Russia’s tightly managed parliamentary vote.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said more than 1,600 drones were intercepted and destroyed, including 450 heading for the capital. He accused Ukraine of trying to disrupt the three-day election expected to strengthen President Vladimir Putin’s 26-year hold on power.

“The unprecedented attack was clearly planned with the aim of disrupting the elections. The enemy did not succeed,” he said on Telegram.

Moscow regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov reported that a 44-year-old woman and an elderly man were killed at two different sites. A drone that crashed into a 21-storey building started a fire and forced the evacuation of 400 residents, he added.

The assault is part of Kyiv’s intensified long-range drone campaign against Russian energy sites, aimed at cutting revenue that funds the war now in its fifth year.

“A facility on the territory of the Moscow Oil Refinery has been damaged,” Sobyanin said, noting no casualties had been reported there so far and that emergency teams were on site. The refinery has been struck by Ukrainian drones in recent months.

The attack came days after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed Ukraine and Russia had agreed not to hit each other’s energy infrastructure. It also coincides with Russia’s first parliamentary elections since the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, a conflict that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. Voting was also organized in occupied parts of Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Air Force Command said Russia launched 138 drones of various types overnight, according to Interfax-Ukraine. Air defenses shot down or neutralized 101 of them.
