Developed by Meta’s Reality Labs research team, the device works with surface electromyography (sEMG) sensors placed on the wrist. These sensors detect electrical signals from muscle movements and translate them into computer commands.
For instance, users can write messages by mimicking writing in the air, open applications, or move the cursor—all without touching a keyboard or mouse.
Meta stated that it is testing this technology with its Orion augmented reality (AR) glasses, adding that this is just the beginning.

“MORE HUMAN, INTUITIVE, AND NATURAL”
The company says the wristband aims to move beyond traditional input devices like keyboards, mice, and touchscreens, offering a more intuitive and natural user experience. Supported by artificial intelligence and machine learning, the device is expected to adapt to individual user needs over time.
This wearable device lets you control computers using hand gestures or even just the intention to move, without touching a screen or keyboard. It uses surface electromyography (sEMG), which detects electrical signals from muscle activity in your forearm.
These signals, sent from your brain via alpha motor neurons, are translated into digital commands like moving a cursor, opening apps, or typing by writing in the air. The wristband’s AI, trained on data from thousands of users, recognizes these signals instantly without needing calibration, making it accessible for diverse users, including those with motor disabilities.
Meta’s testing it with Carnegie Mellon for people with spinal cord injuries, and it’s been paired with their Orion AR glasses for hands-free control. It’s still experimental but could hit the market by 2027, revolutionizing how we interact with devices.
