Thu 12 September 2024:
Thousands of users across the globe faced disruptions accessing Microsoft 365 services on Thursday due to a significant issue with the platform’s network infrastructure. Microsoft confirmed the problem through its Microsoft 365 Status account on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We’re investigating an issue where users may be unable to access multiple Microsoft 365 services.”
Investigating Network Failures and Collaborating with Third-Party ISP
Microsoft further explained that they were “reviewing network telemetry and recent changes to our networking infrastructure”, and added that they were working with a third-party ISP to determine the root cause of the disruption. The issue was later identified as a change within the ISP’s managed environment. Once the ISP reverted the change, Microsoft reported seeing “signs of recovery.”

Widespread Impact: Outlook and Server Connections Most Affected
Data from Downdetector.com showed that more than 24,000 issues were reported on Thursday, with Outlook taking the hardest hit, accounting for 75% of complaints. Server connection problems followed with 17%, and OneDrive reported 8% of the disruptions. Microsoft 365 services include popular platforms like Outlook.com, OneDrive, and Microsoft Teams.
This outage comes on the heels of similar issues faced by CrowdStrike in July, where a network update caused disruptions for Microsoft Windows operating systems.
