Sat 16 April 2022:

As the number of cases in Shanghai increases, more Chinese cities are imposing covid curbs.

On Saturday, Shanghai reported a record number of symptomatic COVID-19 cases, while other areas around China imposed restrictions as the country maintained its “dynamic clearance” strategy aimed at eliminating the highly transmissible Omicron COVID-19 strain.

On Friday, the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone, a central Chinese manufacturing location home to Apple Inc supplier Foxconn, issued a 14-day lockdown “to be adjusted according to the epidemic situation.”

Following scores of COVID-19 infections this month, the city of Xian in northwestern China recommended citizens to avoid unnecessary visits outside their residential compounds and encouraged businesses to have staff work from home or live at their job on Friday.

In response to citizens’ fears about potential food shortages, a Xian government official stated on Saturday that the announcement did not constitute a lockdown and that the city would not enforce one.

Shanghai, the epicenter of China’s latest outbreak, reported a record 3,590 symptomatic cases on April 15, as well as 19,923 asymptomatic cases on Saturday. The number of asymptomatic cases increased slightly from the previous day’s total of 19,872 cases.

Overall, China reported 24,791 new coronavirus cases on April 15, of which 3,896 were symptomatic and 20,895 were asymptomatic, the National Health Commission said on Saturday.

That compares with 24,268 new cases a day earlier – 3,486 symptomatic and 20,782 asymptomatic infections, which China counts separately.
