Sun 18 August 2024:
Ukraine’s military operation across the Russian border has led to the capture of over 150 Russian prisoners of war (POWs) on some days, according to Oleksii Drozdenko, head of the military administration in Sumy. Drozdenko described the attack as the first of “several stages” aimed at taking the fight to Moscow.
Drozdenko revealed that the operation, which began on August 6, had exceeded expectations, with only 15 Ukrainian casualties requiring hospital treatment on the first day. He noted that many captured Russian soldiers were young conscripts unwilling to fight, leading to large numbers of POWs. “Sometimes there are more than 100 or 150 prisoners of war a day,” he said.
As the closest Ukrainian city to the operation, Sumy played a crucial role in the planning. Drozdenko, a key figure in the operation, emphasized the importance of secrecy, hinting that more stages of the offensive are yet to come. He contrasted this incursion with previous raids into Russia’s Belgorod region, suggesting a new, more ambitious strategy is in play.

New Tactics on the Horizon
While Drozdenko refrained from sharing further details, evidence of Ukraine’s evolving tactics emerged when the Ukrainian air force released footage of a bridge in Russia’s Kursk province being destroyed. This action signals Ukraine’s intent to expand its territorial gains and intensify pressure on Russian forces.
The operation is part of a broader effort by Ukraine to strengthen its position by capturing more Russian territory and increasing its “exchange fund” of POWs for future negotiations with Moscow.
