MORE THAN 800,000 PALESTINIANS LIVING IN UNFIT TENTS IN GAZA

Middle East World

Tue 18 August 2026:

More than 2.15 million displaced Palestinians are living in desperate conditions across Gaza, with more than 867,000 sheltering in makeshift tents that are no longer fit for purpose, the Gaza Government Media Office says.

The office warned on Monday of a looming humanitarian catastrophe with winter approaching, noting that more than half a million children are among those living in tents. It called on the international community to pressure Israeli authorities to allow the immediate entry of cranes, weather-resistant tents, insulation materials, and other shelter supplies into the besieged enclave.

“The situation is beyond critical,” the statement said, urging the removal of rubble, rehabilitation of infrastructure, and protection for the most vulnerable populations.

The appeal comes as aid agencies have repeatedly warned that Gaza’s population faces severe shortages of food, water, and medical care amid ongoing Israeli military operations.

According to previous data from the Media Office, the Israeli army destroyed 90 percent of civilian infrastructure in the Strip during its genocide war that began on October 8, 2023, with reconstruction costs estimated by the UN at approximately $70bn.

Gaza municipalities call for urgent fuel entry

The Union of Gaza Strip Municipalities has called on the international community and mediators to press Israel to implement the ceasefire agreement and immediately allow fuel into the territory.

It said supplies had been allowed in for only 40 of Gaza’s 700 generators, while Israel is preventing the entry of fuel needed to operate generators for water wells, pumping stations and sewage facilities.

The union also said diesel supplies for power generators and other vital facilities had been reduced, forcing most water wells out of service and cutting water supplies to tens of thousands of families in displacement camps.

It called for an urgent humanitarian corridor to ensure aid can enter Gaza.

Gaza municipalities warn of looming water crisis

The Union of Gaza Strip Municipalities says more than 1 million people are at risk of severe water shortages as the territory’s water and sewage systems face imminent collapse.

The municipalities called for the urgent entry of fuel and spare parts needed to maintain electricity generators and keep water and sewage facilities operating.

They held Israel responsible for what they described as a looming disaster threatening the lives of residents.

Oxygen station shutdowns threaten lives of dozens of patients, children

The Palestinian Health Ministry issued an urgent warning on Monday over the worsening crisis affecting oxygen generation stations in hospitals across the Gaza Strip, saying most have stopped operating because of the ongoing Israeli blockade, which has prevented the entry of equipment and spare parts needed for maintenance.

In a press statement, the ministry said the crisis now threatens the remaining operational capacity of hospitals and places the lives of dozens of patients and children in critical, life-saving departments under an unprecedented direct threat.

The ministry said 72 intensive care units could face a complete shutdown and paralysis of services due to the severe and continuing shortage of oxygen supplies. It added that 54 neonatal incubator units are facing a direct risk to newborns’ lives because of difficulties in maintaining the oxygen levels required for breathing.

According to the statement, 19 specialised paediatric care units are also suffering a sharp decline in their ability to provide essential respiratory care for acute and chronic cases, while most oxygen production stations have already gone out of service.
