Morocco has begun integrating artificial intelligence (AI) in its court system, marking a significant technological advancement for the North African country.
“AI has introduced significant changes worldwide,” stated Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi during a Justice Committee meeting in the House of Representatives. The minister announced the acquisition and distribution of an AI program to the Supreme Judicial Council, which will assist judges by transcribing verdicts, eliminating the need for manual writing.
“We have purchased an AI program and handed it over to the President of the Supreme Judicial Council for distribution among judges. This program transcribes the judges’ verdicts instead of them writing them manually,” he added.
The AI integration aims to streamline the work of legal professionals, allowing them to efficiently search archives of legal texts and judicial precedents.
In addition, the Justice Ministry is drafting legislation to regulate AI use, addressing concerns about privacy similar to those experienced with social media. Morocco will host a conference in September to discuss international AI practices and develop a legal framework for AI regulation.
Morocco plans to host a conference in September to explore international AI practices and establish a legal framework for AI regulation, according to Ouahbi.
Last February, Morocco announced the establishment of two AI and digitalization schools in the cities of Taroudant and Berkane, marking a pioneering initiative in the country.
