Mon 22 November 2021:

Moscow handed the Lebanese authorities satellite images from the day of last year’s devastating Beirut port blast to aid in the investigation, Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, stated on Monday.

Lavrov stated in a meeting with his Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib in Moscow that Russia had sent images prepared by the country’s satellite agency Roscosmos.

Images of the port before and after the explosion should contribute in determining the cause of the incident, Lavrov said at a press briefing following their meeting.

“We hope that Lebanese specialists will answer this question that is really becoming a very powerful political irritant for Lebanon,” Lavrov said.

Lavrov also stated that they discussed the “possible participation” of Russian companies in the repair of damaged infrastructure in Beirut.

Hundreds of tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored in the Port of Beirut exploded in August 2020, causing a huge explosion throughout the Lebanese city that killed more than 215 people.

The Lebanese judge in charge of the investigation into the bomb was forced to halt his investigation three times due to lawsuits filed by ex-ministers accused of negligence.
