Mufti Taqi Usmani survives attack, police guard killed on Karachi’s Sharae Faisal

A police guard was killed and driver injured after attackers opened fire on Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani’s car on Karachi’s Sharae Faisal Friday afternoon.

The religious scholar’s car was targeted on main Sharae Faisal by attackers on a motorcycle.

Mufti Zubair confirmed that Mufti Usmani was targeted in the attack. His son Imran Taqi confirmed his father is fine.

This is the second incident reported in the city within an hour. Mufti Shahabullah of the Darul Uloom Korangi was killed after firing at Karachi’s Nipa Chowrangi in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Attackers fired at his silver Toyota Corolla when it was exiting the bridge on the ramp leading to Aladin Park and also killed his security guard.

The Sindh chief minister has taken notice and ordered the Karachi police chief to arrest the attackers as soon as possible. He wants to know how this happened and why.

He has ordered more patrolling in Karachi and stricter security at mosques in the city. Murad Ali Shah also ordered the provision of medical facilities to those injured.

Sindh IG Kaleem Imam said that Maulana Taqi leads the Friday prayers at Baitul Mukarram and was on his way there when he was targeted. A police gunman was killed in the incident, he said, adding that they are investigating.

Six to seven bullets were fired. Mufti Usmani was taken to a private hospital but is said to be safe.

He was a judge of the Federal Shariat Court from 1982 to 2002 and the vice-president of Darul Uloom Karachi.
