Fri 13 March 2026:
The Turkish National Defense Ministry said a ballistic munition fired from Iran and entering Turkish airspace was intercepted and neutralized by NATO air and missile defense systems in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Turkish National Defense Ministry confirmed that NATO air and missile defense units deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean destroyed the projectile after it entered Türkiye’s airspace.
The ministry’s statement came after reports that sirens sounded in the southern Turkish city of Adana around 03:00, lasting approximately five minutes. Local reports suggested the projectile might have been heading toward Incirlik Air Base, a key NATO facility hosting US troops.
However, officials did not confirm the exact target or location where the munition was intercepted. The ministry said discussions with the relevant country are ongoing and that developments in the region are being closely monitored with national security as a priority.
This marks the third such incident in March, after two Iranian missiles directed toward Turkish airspace on March 4 and March 9 were also intercepted by NATO security elements.
The reference to NATO air and missile defense systems highlights that the incident was addressed not only at a national level but also within the framework of the alliance’s regional defense posture.
Incirlik Air Base is considered one of NATO’s most strategic military installations in the region. The base hosts US forces and has long played a critical role in regional operations across the Middle East.
Because of this strategic role, reports suggesting the base may have been targeted drew significant attention, raising concerns about the broader regional military balance amid escalating tensions.
