NATO has officially banned the social media app TikTok from the devices it provides to its employees, citing security concerns. as per two NATO officials who were familiar with the matter.

NATO officials confirmed that a note announcing the ban on TikTok was sent to the staff on Friday. The note made the ban official, but the official claimed that internal technological limitations meant TikTok was already barely usable on devices provided by NATO.

“Cyber security is a top priority for NATO. NATO has robust requirements for determining applications for official business use. TikTok is not accessible on NATO devices,” said a senior NATO official.

NATO is the latest government body to ban the app, citing concerns that data from TikTok users could be accessed by the Chinese government via its Chinese parent company, Bytedance.

The application has already been banned from government-issued devices in the United Kingdom, the United States, the European Parliament, Norway, and other countries.

TikTok CEO Shou Chew told US lawmakers earlier this month that the company is completely independent of China and that he has “seen no evidence that the Chinese government has access to that data; they have never asked us, we have not provided it.”

He stated that TikTok is relocating its data to the United States, where it will be stored by Oracle, an American company.
