NEARLY 1,000 CHILDREN KILLED OR INJURED IN UKRAINE-RUSSIA WAR: UNICEF

News Desk World

Tue 23  August 2022:

The UN children’s agency on Monday said that nearly 1,000 children were either killed or injured in Ukraine since Russia launched its war in late February.

This represents an average of more than five a day, according to UNICEF.

“These are just the figures the UN has been able to verify. We believe the true number to be much higher,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “The use of explosive weapons has caused most of the child casualties.”

The agency estimates that 1 in 10 schools have been damaged or destroyed in war.

Russel said all children need to be in school and learning, including children caught up in emergencies.

UKRAINE HAS LOST NEARLY 9,000 SOLDIERS

Commander-in-chief of Ukraine, said on Monday, about 9,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died since Russia’s invasion started, according to the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

Valeriy Zaluzhny told a forum that Ukraine’s children needed particular attention “because their fathers have gone to the front and are maybe among the nearly 9,000 heroes who have been killed”.

Ukrainian officials have only very rarely given any detail on military losses in nearly six months of war.

The last estimate dates back to April when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that up to 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed and 10,000 injured.
