Mon 29 June 2026:

Nearly half of the dialysis machines at Gaza’s al-Shifa Medical Complex are now out of service because of a severe shortage of sodium bicarbonate. This critical substance is used to correct dangerous acid buildup in the blood of patients with kidney failure.

Dr. Ghazi al-Yaziji, head of the Artificial Kidney Department at al-Shifa Medical Complex, said in a statement that 25 dialysis machines are no longer operational, leaving only 26 functioning, and even those are operating only partially.

As a result, medical staff have been forced to reduce dialysis sessions from four hours to three and cut the number of weekly treatments from three to two.

According to al-Yaziji, the measures have severely affected around 240 patients with Stage 5 chronic kidney failure, significantly increasing the risk of serious cardiac and respiratory complications that could prove fatal in some cases.

Despite the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, Israeli occupation has failed to comply with the humanitarian provisions concerning the evacuation of patients and wounded people seeking treatment abroad, while allowing only limited quantities of humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave.

The ceasefire followed Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, during which most of the enclave’s hospitals were destroyed, medical personnel were killed, injured or arrested, and a blockade imposed on Palestinians, further deepening the humanitarian crisis, particularly in the health sector.

More than two years of the genocidal war have killed over 72,000 Palestinians, wounded more than 172,000 others, and devastated around 90% of Gaza’s infrastructure.
