Wed 31 August 2022:
Less than a week after fighting tore apart a four-month-old ceasefire, an air attack struck the neighborhood near a hospital in the capital of Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region late on Tuesday, Reuters reported.
Ayder General Hospital’s CEO, Kibrom Gebreselassie, posted on Twitter that Mekelle General Hospital’s neighborhood had been struck. It was unclear how much damage and casualties had occurred.
Requests for comment on the air strike went unanswered from Legesse Tulu, Colonel Getnet Adane, and Billene Seyoum, the spokeswoman for the prime minister of Ethiopia.
Getachew Reda, spokesman for the Tigray regional government, said on Twitter that at least three bombs had been dropped and that the Mekelle Hospital was among the targets.
Another doctor at Ayder confirmed to Reuters he had heard three explosions late at night.
Since Ethiopian military left the area more than a year ago, Reuters was unable to get in touch with residents of Mekelle for confirmation.
The most recent attack comes after one on a playground on Friday that claimed the lives of seven people, including women and children.
War erupted in Tigray in November 2020 and spread to the neighbouring regions of Afar and Amhara a year ago. Last November, Tigrayan forces marched towards Addis Ababa but were driven back by a government offensive.
A ceasefire was announced in March after both sides fought to a stalemate and the government declared a humanitarian truce, allowing badly needed food aid into the region.
When fighting erupted this week, both blamed each other.
