Proposed Navier-Stokes Proof Could Mark Major Advance in AI Research

 OpenAI said Tuesday that an unreleased artificial intelligence model has solved the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of mathematics’ seven renowned Millennium Prize Problems.

The company said the model took 88 hours to produce the proposed solution, using as many as 10,000 AI agents working in parallel. The achievement, if confirmed, could represent one of the most significant demonstrations yet of AI’s ability to tackle advanced mathematical research.

Decades-Old Fluid Dynamics Question

The Navier-Stokes problem concerns equations that describe the movement of fluids such as water and air. It asks whether their solutions always remain well-behaved or can develop singularities under certain conditions.

OpenAI’s proposed proof claims to demonstrate such a breakdown, known as “blowup”, offering a possible answer to a question that has remained unresolved for decades.

The problem is among seven challenges designated by the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000, each carrying a $1 million prize for a correct solution. Only one of the seven had previously been solved.

OpenAI also published a paper outlining its proposed solution, including a proof written in Lean, a programming language and theorem-proving system used to formally verify mathematical arguments.

However, the claim will require examination by the wider mathematical community before the problem can be regarded as definitively solved.

Dispute Over Parallel Research

The announcement comes amid a dispute involving parallel research by New York University mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpoge, a mathematician at rival AI company Anthropic.

OpenAI acknowledged that it accelerated its work after learning that other mathematicians were pursuing a similar direction, but said it had not seen their work.

The development underscores the rapidly expanding role of AI in higher mathematics, following several recent breakthroughs in longstanding problems that had challenged mathematicians for years or decades.
