PA WORKING TO ENSURE SUCCESS OF PRESIDENT MAHMOUD ABBAS’ VISIT TO GAZA

The Palestinian leadership has initiated regional and international contacts to ensure the success of President Mahmoud Abbas’s upcoming visit to the besieged Gaza Strip, the official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported on Sunday.

Last Thursday, during a speech at the Turkish Parliament, Abbas announced his intention to visit Gaza, along with other members of the Palestinian leadership. The Strip has been under a devastating Israeli assault for 11 consecutive months and the entry and exit of food, water, humanitarian aid and people has been completely limited by Israeli occupation authorities.

According to WAFA, the purpose is an effort to “stand with our people who are being subjected to genocide there.” It also aims to “affirm that the State of Palestine and the Palestine Liberation Organisation are the legitimate authorities over all Palestinian territories and to work towards restoring national unity.”

In this context, contacts have been made with the United Nations, permanent members of the UN Security Council, Arab and Islamic nations, the Arab League, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU).
