Sun 26 December 2021:

Neiphiu Rio, the Chief Minister of India’s northeastern state of Nagaland, stated on Sunday that a committee will debate the contentious Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) being removed from the state.

“A committee to look into the withdrawal of the AFSPA in Nagaland will be instituted,” Rio said on his social media account, adding that the committee will submit its report within 45 days.

Rio made the decision during a meeting with federal Home Minister Amit Shah on Dec. 23 in New Delhi, according to Rio.

After 14 people were killed earlier this month in a botched Indian army operation and the ensuing rioting in Nagaland’s Mon district, the demand for the repeal of AFSPA, which gave the army broad powers, grew in Nagaland.

Across the state, protests calling for the repeal of AFSPA were staged.

According to the administration, disciplinary proceedings against the army unit and individuals engaged in the incident would be initiated by a court of inquiry.

“The identified persons who will face inquiry will be suspended immediately,” the statement read.

Last Monday, Nagaland’s legislative body overwhelmingly decided to demand that AFSPA be repealed throughout the northeast, particularly in the state.
