Fri 12 August 2022:

After a prolonged stretch of hot and dry weather, the British government announced on Friday that portions of southern, central, and eastern England had officially moved into drought status, Reuters reported.

With just 35% of the monthly average rainfall, July in England was the driest since 1935, and now parts of England and Wales are experiencing four days of “extreme heat.”

“All water companies have reassured us that essential supplies are still safe,” Water Minister Steve Double said in a statement. “We are better prepared than ever before for periods of dry weather, but we will continue to closely monitor the situation, including impacts on farmers and the environment, and take further action as needed.”

Water providers will immediately begin implementing pre-agreed-upon drought strategies to help safeguard supplies, and the government has urged residents and businesses in drought-affected areas to use water responsibly.

The most recent drought in England occurred in 2018.
