As Pakistan prepares for the upcoming general elections later this year, the Express Tribune reported that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has formally nominated former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as its designated candidate for the position of Prime Minister.

During a press briefing at the Prime Minister’s House, Shehbaz Sharif, the party’s president, announced that the amendments to the Election Act have effectively absolved Nawaz Sharif of any disqualification, thus removing all impediments to his potential return.
“In my capacity as the party president, I have nominated Nawaz Sharif as the candidate for prime minister from the PML-N,” Shehbaz said.

He underlined that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) holds the ultimate authority in determining the date for the general elections. He added that his party is eager to hold the polls soon.

This development transpired mere hours after Pakistan appointed its new caretaker Prime Minister, Anwaar-ul-Haq.

This announcement came after a meeting between the outgoing Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, and the opposition leader, Raja Riaz.

As per Pakistan’s constitution, an impartial caretaker government oversees national elections, which must be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the lower house of parliament. In the present scenario, this timeframe aligns with early November.

In previous instances, Shehbaz made his stance abundantly clear, leaving no room for doubt, as he expressed with unwavering certainty that in the event of his party’s ascension to power, his brother would unquestionably take on the significant responsibility of becoming the Prime Minister of the country.

This resolute affirmation of familial succession within the political hierarchy underlines the strong connection between Shehbaz’s party’s potential triumph and the envisioned leadership role his brother would undertake at the country’s helm.
