PRESIDENT-ELECT BIDEN ANNOUNCES RON KLAIN AS WHITE HOUSE CHIEF OF STAFF

Thu 12 November 2020:

Joe Biden has named longtime aide Ron Klain as his White House chief of staff, the transition team announced late Wednesday. Klain is the first White House official the president-elect has announced since winning last week’s election.

A longtime aide to Biden, Klain will oversee the Executive Office of the President and serve as a senior advisor.

“Ron has been invaluable to me over the many years that we have worked together, including as we rescued the American economy from one of the worst downturns in our history in 2009 and later overcame a daunting public health emergency in 2014,” said Biden in a statement.

He said Klain’s “deep, varied experience and capacity to work with people all across the political spectrum is precisely what I need in a White House chief of staff as we confront this moment of crisis and bring our country together again.”

Klain was viewed by progressives as less objectionable than other leading candidates. A pair of left-leaning groups even recently conducted polling to prove that Ricchetti and Biden aide Bruce Reed were less popular than Klain. Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Wednesday called Klain a “superb choice” who had “earned trust all across the entire Democratic Party.”

Klain said he was honored to serve Biden in the role and looked forward to assisting him and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris at the presidential mansion.

In a statement Wednesday, Klain said he looks forward to working with Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris to “assemble a talented and diverse team to work in the White House, as we tackle their ambitious agenda for change, and seek to heal the divides in our country.”

The appointment of the 59-year-old is the first for Biden, who is projected to win the Nov. 3 presidential race against his Republican rival Donald Trump.

From 2009-2011, Klain was Biden’s chief of staff under former president Barack Obama’s administration and previously served as chief of staff to Vice President Al Gore during the Clinton administration.

He also oversaw the Obama administration’s response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa in late 2014 and early 2015.

Klain joined Biden’s presidential campaign this year as a senior advisor.
