PRINCESS DIANA BOOK BY EARL SPENCER STOLEN IN NETHERLANDS DAYS BEFORE LAUNCH

Four copies of Earl Spencer’s forthcoming book about his sister, Diana, Princess of Wales, have been stolen from a truck in the Netherlands days before its worldwide release, according to British media reports Wednesday.

The copies of the Dutch-language edition of c were taken while being transported from a printing facility to the Dutch publisher’s warehouse, the BBC reported.

A source familiar with the incident said the driver had stopped in a car park for a mandatory rest period and was sleeping in the truck’s cab when the books were stolen.

The precise location of the theft has not been disclosed. Dutch police are aware of the incident and are investigating, according to the report.

The Daily Mail, which first reported the theft and is serializing the book, said it occurred earlier this week in the Dutch countryside.

The truck was reportedly carrying thousands of copies, but only four were taken. It was not clear whether the thieves deliberately targeted the unreleased memoir or took the copies without knowing what they contained.

British publisher Penguin Michael Joseph, part of Penguin Random House, and Dutch publisher Overamstel were approached for comment.

The book is scheduled to be published in Britain and internationally Sept. 22. It recounts Diana’s life from the perspective of her younger brother, Charles Spencer, and includes his memories of their childhood, her marriage and the period surrounding her death.

Spencer announced the memoir ahead of the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death, explaining that repeated interview requests had persuaded him to put his memories into writing rather than continue reading accounts shaped by other people.

“The aim of this book is to tell the truth about Diana from her brother’s perspective, just as I attempted to do when speaking at her funeral,” he said when the publication was announced. “I want to speak on Diana’s behalf and do so in an openly positive way.”

Diana died at the age of 36 following a car crash in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997. Her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, were 15 and 12 at the time.

At her funeral in Westminster Abbey, Spencer described his sister as the “very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty.”

He also criticized the media’s treatment of Diana, calling her the “most hunted person of the modern age,” and pledged that her family would help protect her sons from suffering a similar fate.
