Fri 23 October 2026:

Activists gathered outside the European Parliament in Brussels on Friday, standing in the rain to express solidarity with residents of Yemen’s besieged city of Taiz and to call on the European Council to implement a resolution adopted by the Parliament the previous day.

On October 22, 2026, the European Parliament approved a non-binding resolution strongly condemning Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia as well as the group’s ongoing military offensive in Yemen. Lawmakers described the actions as violations of international and humanitarian law, noting civilian casualties, displacement, and a worsening humanitarian situation.

The resolution urged the EU Council to add the Houthi movement—including its military and political wings, leadership, and security apparatus—to the EU terrorist list, freeze related assets and economic resources, and dismantle financing channels. The final decision on any such listing rests with EU member states, which must act unanimously.

The protest took place against the backdrop of an intensifying Houthi siege of Taiz, one of Yemen’s major cities and a key front in the conflict between Houthi forces and those loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

Recent reports describe severe shortages of food, clean water, fuel, and medicine inside the city, with hospitals running low on supplies and residents resorting to rationing or alternative cooking methods.

The United Nations has warned of large-scale displacement—hundreds of thousands of people forced from their homes in the wider conflict—and rising civilian casualties as fighting continues on the outskirts of Taiz. Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly called for unimpeded access for aid amid the blockade.
