Mon 30 September 2024:
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday signed a decree to call up 133,000 people as part of the country’s autumn conscription.
According to the decree, which was published on the government portal, 133,000 non-reservists aged 18 to 30 and are subject to conscription will be called up from Oct. 1 until the end of the year.
The decree also dismissed those whose term of military service by conscription expired. The move came two weeks after Putin signed a decree increasing the number of staffers and military personnel in the Russian army. According to the decree, the staffing level of the armed forces rose from 2.2 million to 2.38 million. The decree also increased the number of military personnel from 1.32 million to 1.5 million.

The Russian army, one of the largest and most powerful military forces in the world, launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. This marked an escalation of the conflict that began in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea and supported separatist movements in eastern Ukraine.
Initially, Russia aimed for a quick victory, attempting to capture Kyiv and other key cities. However, the Ukrainian military, supported by Western weapons and intelligence, mounted a strong resistance, forcing Russia to shift its focus to eastern and southern Ukraine.
The Russian army has faced significant challenges throughout the war, including logistical failures, poor morale, and leadership issues. Heavy casualties have been a key problem for Russia. Estimates of Russian troop losses vary, with Ukrainian officials claiming upwards of 200,000 killed, wounded, or missing. Western intelligence and independent analysts also suggest high numbers, though these figures are difficult to verify. Russia itself has been tight-lipped, with official numbers much lower, but there is a consensus that Russian casualties have been substantial.
Russia has relied heavily on artillery and missile strikes, causing widespread destruction, but this strategy has also led to high civilian casualties in Ukraine. Both sides are locked in a prolonged and brutal conflict, with neither achieving a decisive victory. For Russia, the war has exposed weaknesses in its military, and its losses have led to increased domestic criticism and recruitment struggles.
