RACIALLY MOTIVATED CRIMES IN FRANCE ON RISE

Crimes and offences of racist, xenophobic and anti-religious nature rose by 11 percent in France last year, the country’s interior ministry reported.

The report mentions 9,350 incidents and 6,985 fines in 2024, with the police recording “more than 16,000 racist, xenophobic or anti-religious offences across the country” that year, Middle East Eye reported.

French security services also recorded “9,700 victims of racially motivated crimes and offences”, with an overrepresentation of men, people aged between 25 and 54 years, and those coming from an African country.

The increase follows a 30 percent rise in similar attacks in 2023 “mainly during the last quarter, in a context of strong tensions in the Middle East”, according to the report.

Overall, French media says that such crimes and offences have risen by 44 percent over the past two years.

Public insults comprised of 52 percent of crimes and offences, while threats and blackmail accounted for 20 percent.

Discrimination and provocations made 10 percent of the data, while attacks on properties and murder attempts were the rarest cases, representing five and six percent of the data respectively.

The ministry’s report noted that five racially motivated homicides were recorded in 2024.

Paris also appears as an outlier in the report, recording an average of incidents that is three to four times higher than the national average.

The ministry says this may be linked to more people being drawn to the capital overall, for either work or tourism.

While the increases in attacks are notable, the report says it “reflects both the evolution of the phenomenon itself but also that of the population’s propensity to report these acts and the improvement in their consideration by the security services”.
