Sun 07 July 2024:

A persistent heatwave is endangering more than 130 million people in the United States, with record-breaking temperatures expected from coast to coast, according to forecasters. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that temperatures could soar above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) in regions including the Pacific Northwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast.

Meteorologist Jacob Asherman highlighted that Oregon cities such as Eugene, Portland, and Salem could see record temperatures, with cooling centers opening nationwide to provide relief. The NWS has extended excessive heat warnings for much of the southwest into next week, predicting temperatures up to 30 degrees Fahrenheit above average.

Baltimore and parts of Maryland are also under heat advisories, with heat index values potentially reaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius). The NWS advises staying hydrated, avoiding the sun, and checking on vulnerable individuals.

In addition to the heat, the western U.S. faces wildfire risks. The Thompson Fire in Butte County, California, has burned nearly 1,554 hectares, while the French Fire near Yosemite National Park has spread over 323 hectares.

Meanwhile, southern Texas is bracing for heavy rains from remnants of Hurricane Beryl. The Midwest has experienced extreme heat since June, driven by high humidity and atmospheric heat domes.
