A Russian court has fined Google 4 million rubles ($43,680) for failing to block access to certain content banned in Russia.

The court found Google guilty of failing to comply with the law by not restricting access to some prohibited content on YouTube.

“Google LLC. was found guilty of committing an administrative offense under Part 2 of Article 13.50 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (failure by the owner of a social network to fulfill the obligation to monitor and (or) take measures to limit access to information), he was sentenced to an administrative fine in the amount of 4 million rubles,” the official said.

In February 2021, the law on self-control of social networks came into effect in Russia. The law obliges platforms to independently identify and block illegal content. In 2023, amendments to the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation were adopted, according to which social networks face fines of up to 8 million rubles ($87,322) for non-compliance with the requirements of this law.

Google had been fined for similar reasons before.

The company’s subsidiary in Russia also initiated a bankruptcy process in 2022 on the grounds that it could not fulfill its financial obligations.
