RUSSIA TO FACE ‘VERY STEEP’ TARIFFS IF IT DOES NOT AGREE TO CEASEFIRE WITHIN 50 DAYS: WHITE HOUSE

Russia will face “very steep” tariffs if it does not agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine within 50 days, the White House said Thursday.

“Well, in 50 days, as clearly laid out, if there is not a ceasefire agreement or a peace deal within that time frame, if Russia refuses to legitimately agree to a ceasefire, then they will face very steep tariffs, and they will also face secondary sanctions.

“So, countries that are purchasing oil from Russia will be sanctioned as well, and of course, that will do deep damage to Russia’s economy,” spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told reporters.

President Donald Trump wants the war to end with a diplomatic solution, said Leavitt.

“He’s been pushing for it … the president wants to stop the killing and he wants to save lives,” she added.

Since early 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump has pushed for a ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war, which began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Trump initially claimed he could end the conflict in 24 hours, citing his relationships with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

After multiple calls, including a two-hour discussion with Putin on May 19, 2025, Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine would “immediately” start ceasefire talks. However, no immediate truce was secured. Ukraine supports an unconditional 30-day ceasefire, while Putin insists on addressing “root causes,” demanding Ukraine cede occupied territories and forgo NATO membership.

Direct talks in Istanbul in May 2025 yielded a prisoner swap but no ceasefire. Trump has since escalated pressure, announcing on July 14, 2025, that the U.S. would supply Ukraine with weapons via NATO, with Europe covering costs, and threatened 100% tariffs on Russia’s trade partners if no deal is reached within 50 days. Despite these efforts, Russia continues bombardments, and talks remain stalled, with both sides far apart on terms.
