Data centres reportedly targeted as Ukraine warns attacks threaten access to life-saving information

Russian drone attacks on Wednesday disrupted internet services for around 100,000 households in Kyiv and the surrounding region, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation.

The ministry said the attacks continued for several hours, from the morning into the early afternoon. Technical teams were assessing the damage and repairing affected networks in an effort to restore services.

The disruption followed strikes that Ukrainian officials said damaged data-centre infrastructure in Kyiv. Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had targeted several data centres, logistics facilities and warehouses that it claimed were supporting the Ukrainian military. It said two data centres in Kyiv and two logistics sites in the Black Sea port of Odesa were among the locations hit.

Ukraine says data centres are vital civilian infrastructure

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said attacks on data centres could have consequences beyond internet connectivity because digital networks carry information used during air attacks.

“Russia has targeted major Ukrainian data centers, seeking to disrupt the flow of information. Rapid alerts ⁠about ‌missile and drone ‌threats are essential – they ⁠save lives,” he wrote on X.

“This is critical civilian infrastructure that ensures people can access life-saving ⁠information. It is not ⁠a military target. It is essential to ⁠keeping everyday life functioning.”

Data networks have become an important part of Ukraine’s wartime infrastructure, supporting communications and the rapid distribution of air-raid and missile warnings. The latest disruptions demonstrate how attacks on digital infrastructure can affect civilian services even when the immediate targets are described as military or logistical facilities.

Kyiv faces continuing Russian drone attacks

The internet outage came amid another major wave of Russian drone attacks on Kyiv and surrounding areas. Ukrainian authorities reported damage to multiple sites in the capital, while local officials said the attacks also caused casualties.

The latest strikes are part of a broader escalation in attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, as both Russia and Ukraine have increasingly used long-range drones against military, energy, industrial and logistical targets during the continuing war.
