Mon 27 September 2021:

An allergic response to a snake bite during a stunt performance to entertain fellow watermelon pickers has killed a man in Astrakhan, Russia.

The unidentified agricultural worker, 55, can be seen in a video putting the snake in his mouth to entertain fellow watermelon pickers in Astrakhan, a city on the Volga River in southern Russia.

The man was bitten on the tongue by the little steppe snake following his third attempt at the trick, according to British tabloids The Daily Mail and The Sun.
After his tongue swelled, he was transported to the hospital.

The tabloids, citing local Russian news outlets, said the worker suffered anaphylactic shock and his tongue “could barely fit in his mouth” while he gasped for air.

Citing news outlet Punkt-A, a local herpetologist said the snake — although venomous — is not poisonous to humans.

The worker “died solely from an allergic reaction similar to what may occur with a wasp sting.”

The reptile specialist warned people in the area from performing the trick.

“You just should not try to swallow a snake or carry out any other experiments if you are not sure that it may end up in an unfavourable way for you.”
